Davie Allan's comments on selected releases |
|
APACHE '65 - Our first LP gave little indication as to what the defined "Arrows" sound would be.
With only a taste of distortion on two tracks, the "Fuzz" sound would not rear its ugly head for another year. |
|
THE WILD ANGELS - As the story goes,
Roger Corman saw the 1966 Grand Prix winner of the Cannes Film Festival "Skaterdater" and my
treatment of the tune "Skaterdater Rock" led to us doing the music for his film.
Two dozen "B" movie soundtracks came out of that era with "The Wild Angels"
coming in as the best of the bunch. |
|
DEVIL'S ANGELS - the second of our many biker soundtracks starred
John Cassavetes as leader of the gang terrorizing Mimsy Farmer's small town, USA.
The soundtrack for the film is quite notable in that it included some top Hollywood studio
musicians such as Hal Blaine, Carol Kaye and Larry Knechtel. |
|
BORN LOSERS - This was Tom Laughlin's first appearance as the character "Billy Jack".
We re-recorded the theme for a "Get Hip Records" single in 1997 and then again as a
two song medley with "Blues' Theme" for our CD/vinyl album "The Arrow
Dynamic Sounds of....". |
|
THE GLORY STOMPERS - Dennis Hopper starred in this a year before "Easy Rider". We re-recorded an instrumental version of the theme for the flip-side of the "Get Hip" single. My original vocal(!?) version played during the end credits of that 1968 film. |
|
ASTROLOGY FOR YOUNG LOVERS - Of special note because of the narration by Casey Kasem. Although I wrote and played the musical interludes with no credit, I was thrilled to do it anyway because of Casey's role in helping
"Blue's Theme" become a hit (he was a DJ at radio station KRLA). |
|
WILD IN THE STREETS - Will my 60's producer run for president someday? The cartoon of him on the cover of our awful version of the soundtrack shows what his goal was. As I told it in "FUZ" magazine, I was a robot
on this one-the powers that be decided it was passé to use a fuzz tone!?!? We recorded a
much improved remake of one of the film's tunes "Shape of Things to Come" for a 1998
Total Energy single. The flip-side is a tune I wrote for Dick Dale in 1996 titled
"Vanishing Breed". |
|
CYCLE-DELIC SOUNDS - For the most part,
this LP contained the best of our 1960's recordings. Unfortunately, the wrong versions of the
"Devil's Angels Theme" and "Cody's Theme" were used plus a classic piece
called "We Tune Because We Care" was omitted. Where is that tape? More importantly,
where are the multi-track tapes of that era? |
|
LOUD, LOOSE AND SAVAGE -
Released on Iloki Records in 1994 and re-released on Dionysus Records in 1999,
this CD comprises ten years of recordings with Chris Ashford as producer. Eleven of the
seventeen tracks first appeared on the 1990 Dionysus vinyl LP "Old Neck and New
Strings". |
|
FUZZ FEST - Also produced by Chris
Ashford, this follow-up to "Loud, Loose and Savage" was first released on AVI
in 1996 and then re-released on Total Energy in 1999. Where does this one come in on
the list of my almost four decades of recording? Right behind my new "Restless in L.A." CD! |
|
RAMONETURES - Mel Bergman
(The Phantom Surfers) asked me to play lead on this "Venturesque" take on the Ramones. It was
a fun but challenging project since I had to learn the melodies of 16 tunes that I had never heard
before. Also, except for a couple of tunes, I went "fuzzless" for the first time since 1982. |
|
ENCOUNTER - This track which
is available on the "Gearhead" CD released in 2000 marked the first session with Lee
Joseph on bass. We also worked with engineer Jeff Peters for the first time and look forward to
doing so again. The track was first released on one side of the "Gearhead Magazine"
single (issue #9, 1999). |
|
RESTLESS IN L.A. - This album marks 40 years since my first record and is dedicated to my mom. I lost her on December 15, 2001. Words cannot describe the emptiness. "I miss you mom, this one's for you." This one takes the place of "Fuzz Fest" as my favorite, my best. Release date August 26, 2003 by Sundazed. |
